Increases would jeopardize fragile economic recovery

In mid-November, the Nova Scotia Economic Advisory Council presented their recommendations for addressing Nova Scotia's fiscal challenge to Premier Darrell Dexter. The province without question faces a dire economic forecast. The panel concluded that Nova Scotia "is on an unsustainable fiscal path and that difficult decisions are needed to change course." With a shrinking, aging population, Nova Scotia faces the very real threat of reduced federal transfers, corresponding with rapidly increasing health care demands.
