As a result of Retail Council of Canada's vigorous lobbying in Ottawa and an aggressive national media campaign, debit and credit card merchant fees have become a significant issue on the public policy agenda. RCC's efforts, which began in the Fall of last year with the launch of our StopStickingItToUs campaign, led to public hearings in both the Senate and the House of Commons. On June 30, 2009, the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce released its final report, which included a number of favourable recommendations aimed at addressing the concerns raised by RCC on behalf of the industry.
